About Big Spring

The town’s name originates from an appropriately large spring that drew early inhabitants with an easily-accessible source of fresh water. While the original spring is no longer active, the site can still be visited today and is filled artificially. The city’s early development rested with the railroad’s expansion west. A second boom in the early 20th century occurred with the arrival of the oil industry, which remains a significant part of the town’s economy.

Today Big Spring is the largest community in Howard County with lots of things to do. A variety of museums cover areas of the town’s history, including the Hangar 25 Air Museum. Two large nearby parks offer a wealth of outdoor activities: Big Spring State Park and Commanche Trail Park. The town plays host to the US Hang Gliding Nationals and has been featured in a few different films, including Best Picture winner Midnight Cowboy.
