About Odessa

Odessa began in 1881 as a simple water stop on the expanding Texas and Pacific Railway. The town grew quickly and became the county seat of Ector County ten years later in 1891. Odessa’s growth blossomed in the 1920s with the discovery of oil nearby. The oil industry fueled expansion in a boom/bust cycle over the remainder of the 20th Century. In more recent years, the city has diversified its power production into wind and “clean” coal.

Odessa is a place to go for a hopping good time. Quite literally, as the city’s symbol is the jackrabbit. This dates back to the rabbit rodeo that first began in the 1930s.
